Making the Efficient More Effective – by Defining Project Success in Terms of Business Outcomes

Projects provide a means of implementing organisational strategy. However, project success is often focused on efficiency rather than effectiveness.

Using a public sector case study, this presentation will describe how managers can make projects more effective by defining project scope and success criteria in terms of project outcomes, benefits and outputs.

This approach aligns with Drucker’s five practices for effective executives by supporting more effective project management; providing a results orientated, rather than a task-orientated approach, helping stakeholders to identify, prioritise and define expected project outcomes and maintain a common focus; using prioritisation to focus on the areas where superior performance will produce the best results; and, ensuring that project outcomes, benefits and outputs align with strategic outcomes, benefits and outputs.
